I am watching the Congressional Hearing on baseball and steroids. This is very interesting, not just because I'm a baseball fan, but because I believe that parents today are not doing enough to protect and teach their children and continue to try to find other people, events and things to blame for the behavior of their children.
Yes, it is true that ball players are role-models. When I was growing up, my favorite player was Don Mattingly and I would emulate his swing when I would play whiffle ball with my brother. Never did I consider trying anything beyond Gatorade and lots of practice to enhance my performance. At the same time, my parents refused to allow the influences of the world to dominate me. I was banned from watching certain shows on television and from listening to certain types of music. I was also forbidden to befriend certain people based on what my parents experienced around certain people.
Having said this, the dilemma that I believe Congress is facing is this: Do they take the steps to address the problem, thus letting today's parents off the hook or do they let things go and continue to see the future of the world crumble?
Your opinions please.
Update: I commend the Congresspeople on the committee for attempting to try and improve a problem that exists, not only in baseball, but in the country. That said, I'm disappointed in the players for not opening up and telling the truth about themselves and their teammates. We as fans deserve to know the truth.
